How It Works

Story is in the heart of our process, but a story can take on many different shapes and be utilized for a wide variety of purposes form legislative or impact campaigns, to web content or education, to a film festival piece geared towards a wider audience.

But no matter the purpose of your final film, we know it should inspire meaningful conversation and engage the hearts & minds of your audience. And it should always be clear, impactful, and memorable.

As an impact-driven video production company, we help you identify the most effective avenues to communicate with your audience and drive change.

We provide all services necessary to take your story from script to screen. This includes story identification, concept development, storyboarding, casting narrative or documentary subjects, interview questions, all aspects of production (like cinematography, drone, etc.), editing, color grading, 2D or 3D motion graphics, animation, music & sound design, and the final delivery in the format of your choice.

Process breakdown

  • This is the initial step for us to understand your organization, your mission, your audience, and the potential for the impact of your film.

  • This is where we begin identifying and developing your strongest story. We will also determine who the best people are to tell it, explore the most interesting B-roll opportunities and create pre-interview questions.

  • We speak with all of our selected interviewees and delve deep into their stories. At the end of this process, we will make a final selection of our speakers.

  • We develop the filming schedule and create the interview questions together. You will have an opportunity to give feedback/help steer our story during all of the steps in pre-production. At the end of this process we are all on the same page and ready to film.

  • We execute filming utilizing the best tools for the story. We have most of the necessary equipment in house, such as cameras, sound, lights, drone, gimbal, etc., but we may decide to supplement the equipment or add crew based on the scope of production.

  • We edit your film. We may want to add motion graphics or animation or keep it simple. You will have 2 rounds of review, as well as original or licensed music, professional color correction and sound mix included in the edit.

  • We deliver your Final in the format of your choice. We will agree on all the deliverables beforehand.

FAQ

We hope you will find the answers to all of your questions here, but if not, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

How long does it take to complete a film?

This is highly dependent on the length and complexity of your film, but most films that are 2-6 minutes in length take 2-3 months to complete, from conception to final cut.

What if we have a special screening deadline? Can you complete it faster?

The simple answer is yes, but within reason. We want to make sure you are able to showcase your film at that fundraiser, event, or a legislative meeting, but we don't want to compromise on quality because of the rush. We encourage you to get in touch with us as well in advance as possible.

How much does it cost?

This will be highly dependent on the length and complexity of your film, the number of shooting dates, crew, animation, graphics, etc. We are happy to provide you a quote free of charge. We have experience working with high budgets and international crews, as well as underfunded nonprofits. Our priority is the story and the potential impact, not a paycheck, so we will work with you to make sure we are able to deliver the best possible film within your budget.

Do you charge for quotes or initial consultation?

No. Our quotes and initial consultation are always free. Give us a call at +1 (415) 735-0086‬ or email us at info@colorfoolfilms.com to set up a consultation.

What if my story is not in the Bay Area? Do you travel?

We love to travel and have worked on stories all over the world from multi-day hike expeditions in secluded forests to disaster areas, from busy urban environments to remote islands and villages.

Will it cost more to shoot in other locations?

Yes. There will be additional travel and lodging costs, but besides that, we don't charge anything extra to shoot somewhere else. We have ways to keep travel costs down and will always approve these costs in advance.

Do you BOOK YOUR OWN TRAVEL or will I have to do it?

We can take care of all booking and traveling as part of the pre-production process.

How many shooting days are usually necessary?

Each film is unique, but our average is 2-3 shooting days. Many films do well with a single shooting day, but there are times when we may want to shoot 5 or even more days to ensure we tell the full story.

We are very busy. What is the time commitment expected from us?

We love working closely with you and your team and encourage you to be as involved as possible during all the stages of production; however, we completely understand that sometimes this is simply not possible. We can take over most of the work and schedule check-ins that work with your schedule to receive your feedback on the completed steps.

What if I am not sure what kind of film would work best?

That's okay. A big part of our pre-production process is designed to help identify your strongest story based on your audience and your impact goals. Together, we will identify the type of film that would work best, whether you need motion graphics or animation, and how to execute your vision with quality and a heart.
